The First Double A-Sided Single

This post is part recording music history and part tribute to a great band.

For decades before the compact disc (CD) came out in the early 1980s, the world had the vinyl record. The vinyl record was termed as such because it was manufactured out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The records were played on a turntable and for a while, they came out in four speeds or "RPMs" ("Revolutions Per Minute") namely, 78 rpm, 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm, and 16 2/3 rpm. However, by the 1950s and up to the eventual demise of the vinyl record in the early 1980s, two speeds remained dominant in the record market: the 33 1/3 rpm for "long-playing" (LP) records and the 45 rpm for the "singles".

The practice prevalent in the recording industry in those days was that a recording artist would go into the recording studio and record several songs that will be compiled onto an LP or "album". The artist and his/her recording producer would then select the song they deem the "best" out of the songs recorded and release it to the public as a single. The "best" song was placed on the top or "A" side of the single while a song of "lesser quality" (for lack of a better term) was placed at the bottom or "B" side. Once the "A" and "B" sides of a single were selected, the singles were then "pressed" (another old recording industry term used to describe the record manufacturing process) and subsequently released and marketed to the record-buying public.

Such was the standard practice for a lot of the recording artists during that period. However, Talent is one thing that's never distributed evenly. As a result, every once in a while, there were artists that came along that were so enormously gifted that the recording industry had to make some adjustments or changes to its practices just to accommodate the volume of high quality songs these individuals produced.

The Beatles was one such group.

Led by the songwriting tandem of the late John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the Beatles dominated the music world during the 1960s. This songwriting duo cranked one hit tune after another in spite of a grueling work pace. Unlike recording artists these days who produce albums at the average rate of one every two years, the Beatles produced two albums every year. One album was released around the May-June period while the second album was released around the Christmas season. And while they were not recording, they had commitments to do concert tours, and movie and television appearances.

But even in the face of everything that was thrown at them, the Beatles still managed to come up with a significant number of high quality songs. The Lennon-McCartney songwriting effort was so prolific that on top of the two albums they produced each year, their recording company, Parlophone in the United Kingdom, had to issue singles for some very good songs that did not make it on any Beatles album. Examples of these songs were "She Loves You", "From Me To You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "I Feel Fine".

But it was in 1965 when they became the first band in music history to record and produce a "Double A-Sided Single", meaning that both songs were good enough to make it on the A side of any single.

Released in early December 1965, "We Can Work It Out" and "Day Tripper" were the two songs that made up the first double A-sided single.

"We Can Work It Out" was essentially a Paul McCartney composition. This was a song he wrote supposedly about a spat he had with his girlfriend at the time, the British actress Jane Asher. John Lennon provided Mr. McCartney with the song's middle shift and refrain.

The following shows a promotional video that was produced for the song. On the video you will see Paul McCartney doing the lead vocals, John Lennon providing backup vocals (and humor) while on keyboards, the late George Harrison playing lead guitar, and Ringo Starr playing drums.

The other song on the single, "Day Tripper", was a John Lennon composition. There is some confusion as to what actually inspired the song. Mr. Lennon stated in an interview that the song was about a prostitute on a "day trip" while Mr. McCartney, on the other hand, admitted years later that the song was about drugs.

The following shows the promotional video that was produced for the song. In a departure from a Beatle rule that a song's composer does the lead vocals, Paul McCartney sings lead while John Lennon does the backup vocals.

This Double A single eventually landed and stayed at the top of the UK Charts for five weeks from December 1965 to January 1966 and was at the top of the US Charts for three weeks in January 1966. (Source: About The Beatles)

In their remaining years as a group and as a testament to their talent, the Beatles would go on to release three more of these Double A-sided singles: "Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby" (released August 1966), "Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane" (February 1967), and "Something / Come Together" (October 1969). The band broke up in April 1970.

It has been almost 40 years since their breakup but not a single musical artist or band has come close to duplicating what the Beatles accomplished. News came out recently that Mariah Carey had just scored her 18th #1 hit on the Billboard Charts with the song "Touch My Body". This feat put her two singles shy of the Beatles' all-time record of 20 #1 hits.

However, one needs to put things into their proper perspective. One needs to consider the fact that it took Ms. Carey close to two decades to accomplish her feat, having been a recording artist since the early 1990s. The Beatles, on the other hand, accomplished their record within the eight years (1962-1970) the band was together. Let's also add the fact that all of the Beatles' #1 hits were Beatle compositions.

The songs, the numbers, the chart records, and the band's enduring popularity even among members of generations that were not yet around during their years of existence provide lasting evidence of the band's greatness.

On another note, to my countrymen in the Philippines who are dealing with the fury of Typhoon Frank, may this note find you and your families safe and secure. You all take care.

there are many wannabes but were only successful in imitating. there was once a local band who was said to be like the Beatles but the band members separated after a short stint. and that is the Eraserheads.

i think it is the capability to sustain that is why some bands do not prosper. i see a lot of talents in the music industry, foreign and local. they do not necessarily have to imitate but do some music that will register globally.

It would be interesting to note that during the later years, the fab four would record their songs with bands of their own. And part of the conflict they had was what song to include in an album. George, for example, would wnat to have more songs but how can he compete with Lennon and McArtney?

That just goes to show what great talents they were.

With all due respect to Maria Carey (and her fans), I find it hard to compare the diva to the Beatles. She may have broken the 40 year-old record but she has yet to attain the group's legendary stature. Just my two centavos worth... :-D

However, the Beatles themselves admit that they owe part of their success to one man. And that is, Buddy Holly. In fact they made a cover of some of his hits that included, among others, "Everyday". And as a tribute to the man, they named their group "The Beatles", which was somewhat a reference to Holly's band "The Crickets"...

if any band will try to duplicate the beatles' feat, it won't happen. the beatles did it because they were having so much fun.

i once told my nephews about listening to LPs and 35s. they looked at me like i said something crazy. i had to explain it to them.

i am old, man. i am old.

I was exposed to Beatles at a very early age because my Mom is a fan. She's got stocks and stocks of Beatle's songs in 45rpm.

But among the four, I like Paul best. A great composer and a wizard in base guitar. He played it like its the lead guitar.

RJ,

Maraming salamat, Pards. Hayaan mo at siguradong masusundan pa iyan salamat sa YouTube. Hehehe :D

I agree. I'd also like to point out that The Beatles didn't have to marry any big-time record producer to achieve their record setting feat. (Obvious ba that I'm not a Mariah fan?)

Bingskee,

I agree with what you said about a band's capability to sustain. What made the Beatles tick was that to start off, three of them (John, Paul and George) had been friends since they were in their teens and thus they enjoyed a very strong sense of camaraderie. Plus, they all badly wanted to become successful musicans and worked hard at it.

They worked well as a team and it was only years later, when they outgrew that phase in their lives and had developed their own individual interests that the band started breaking up.

Rolly,

That's true. George Harrison was a gifted songwriter and musician and would have shined had he been a member of any other band. However, you're right in that he had the fortune/misfortune of also being in the same band as Lennon and McCartney who were extremely talented individuals. Thus, he had to make do with the two or three songs that were allotted to him on each album.

My fave George Harrison songs are "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Here Comes The Sun". :)

Rudy,

Buddy Holly did have an influence on the Beatles, most especially John Lennon. They did a cover of one of Buddy Holly's songs "Words of Love" on the "Beatles For Sale" album.

You're right in that Holly's Crickets influenced John Lennon when the latter came up with "Beatles" as the band's name. :)

Atticus,

We're not "old". We're simply more mature, experienced, and sophisticated. Naks! Hehehe :D

Yes, the Beatles enjoyed what they were doing and were also a very cohesive unit due to the fact that three of them had been friends for so long before they became famous.

Blogusvox,

Ang suwerte mo naman na fan and mommy mo ng Beatles. My parents weren't and so growing up, my mom often complained about the music. :D

I read somewhere years ago that said that although Paul McCartney was a bit coy about his bass playing, a number of musicians and music critics consider him to be one of the best bass guitar players ever.

Panaderos said...

Mon,

Hahaha That is so true. The Beatles made it on their own merits.

In fairness to Mariah Carey, she did say with humility in an interview that although she was flattered by the achievement, she did say that great artists such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley were in a different category altogether from her.

The Dong,

Yes, these Double A-sided singles were also available sa 'Pinas back in those days. I highly doubt if they still are. Both songs are now part of Beatle compilations such as "1". which was a collection of the Beatles' #1 hits.

Panaderos, I long remember my childhood when my turntable had a special adapter for 45s. I also remember the plastic inserts we put in 45s.

I know the industry has changed so much I could scarcely comprehend big new stars like the Beatles. Thosae times are gone.

Panaderos said...

Hi Keith,

Those days are truly gone. There are great bands like U2 but although they're big, they're not as big as the Beatles ever got to be. There's no mania around them that the Beatles had.

I still have those adapters for the 45 rpms back home in the Philippines. In fact, our old turntable is still there although it has not been used for years.

Inabot ko din yang LP, hehehe.

I am sure all the artists nowadays have looked up to the Beatles as their inspiration. And with Elvis, they are a notch above rest.

Don Henley (himself a prolific songwriter and singer) of the Eagles admitted that the Beatles were sort of an inspiration and he was devastated by the killing of John Lennon.

Panaderos said...

Photo Cache,

It's true that there were quite a number of artists who were inspired by the Beatles, especially in the area of songwriting.

Prior to the Beatles, there were only a few singers who wrote and sang their own material such as Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. The Beatles inspired a lot of budding musicians to try their hand in songwriting such as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and as you had mentioned, Don Henley.

I think there are more Beatles songs that talk about drugs - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, A Little Help From My Friends are two examples.

In their DVD THe Beatles Anthology, a special documentary minus John who died in 1980, the group said that they would no do a reuniun tour without John because without him, they are not THe Beatles. I thought that was cool :)

Panaderos said...

BW,

Until the very end, John Lennon remained adamant that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was not about LSD but was about a drawing his son Julian did of his (Julian's) friend Lucy. Julian showed it to his father one day and in describing it, used the words that his father ended up using as the song's title.

So whatever inspired the song, I guess we will never know for sure.

The Beatles were a very cohesive unit and remained so for years. The relationships were not just professional but also very personal. What the group said that they won't be the Beatles without John was evidence of that cohesiveness.
