Fire and Rain

"I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you again."

A sad one but this is my favorite James Taylor song.

It's an introspective song that speaks of heartache, personal loss, and broken dreams. This is one of the songs I love to listen to whenever I find myself in a reflective mood. I was already a student in college when I got to know and love this song. I was working on recovering from a relationship that had ended much too soon. I found comfort and, eventually, strength in the song's words.

To this day, I still listen to this beautiful song whenever life's troubles decide to spend time with me. The song's words help me face down the challenges that come my way. A lot of times, I look to its words like a prayer that will help get me through the rough times.

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus.
You've got to help me make a stand.
You've just got to see me through another day.
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way.

However, it is not only during such moments that I listen to this tune. There are also times when I turn to it to simply enjoy a quiet moment.

Fire and Rain was James Taylor's first hit. Released in February 1970, the song was released as a single from his second album, Sweet Baby James. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts that same year. The clip above was from a live performance of the song that Mr. Taylor did back in 1970 on British TV.

I like live performances done in intimate settings such as the one in this clip. I chose it because Mr. Taylor's fine live performance was complemented by an appreciative and yet very respectful audience. The words, music, and the emotion expressed resonated with the audience.

Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone.
Susanne, the plans they made put an end to you.
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song;
I just can't remember who to send it to.

I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you again.

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus.
You've got to help me make a stand.
You've just got to see me through another day.
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you again.

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun,
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around;
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
to come,
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now.

Thought I'd see you one more time again....
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now....
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now....

Autumn in 1971 San Diego when I first heard this song during my teens. It always reminds of the city. Is he still alive?

Cheers and goodhealth!

I love James Taylor too and this song too. I was singing along in my head while reading through the post. My ultimate favorite though is "Your Smiling Face".

I really dont buy cds [before the advent of itune], but i bought his and i listen to it when i need a little bit of cheering up. He was at the Colbert Report and he's got a new cd he's promoting.

Know that this is also one of my fave songs even when i am no longer broken-hearted..yayy! i always love soulful music...it lifts my spirit.

the most sad and even the not-so-sad music tells our story esp. when at times when we're so broken.

Luna Miranda,

I like that song too. :)

TruBlue,

Yes, JT is still around. In fact, he has a new CD coming out. :)

Btw, thanks for the visits. Much appreciated.

Panaderos, I love that music. I am thinking, though, that it is a bit sad. Perhaps there is a melancholy in my soul that gets touched whenever I hear music like that.

I cannot be sure. But I appreciate the sharing. As for Sarah Palin.... Is it amazing that just for her introduction, suddenly her glasses become a fashion statement...

That was a familiar song to me bro, I remembered performed that song during my high school days (1974) James Taylor fanatic din kasi tayo. Now pareho na kaming bald ni pareng James.

That song brings me back to my high school years when every JT song is a must-play during our guitar cum drinking sessions, hehe. :-D

i've heard this song before, but this live version just made me ... sigh. lovely song, indeed. got the lyrics too - just as i too have seen fire and have seen rain.

Panaderos said...

Atticus,

I'm ok naman. I'm not sad. Thanks for the concern. :) Hindi mo na kailangang ipagluto ako ng adobo. Hehehe But thanks for the thought. :D

Ever,

That's true. Pasulpot-sulpot ang lungkot and it often comes to us at a time of its choosing.

Salamat sa suporta, Pards. I'm ok. :)

Panaderos said...

Rheiboy17,

I might accept that invitation one of these days. Thanks for the kind thoughts, Pards. :)

Em Dy,

"Your Smiling Face" came out during my elementary years. I love that song too because of its joyful expression of love. :)

Parati kong binabalik-balikan yang version na yan sa youtube. i even liked the version it has of Steamroller. I also discovered a clip of him and Karli Simon doing a duet in, probably their house. And yes, the "Mockingbird" song which they sang in a concert called ?No Nukes" ata. It's been a long time since I saw that film but the song is still in my mind.

Panaderos said...

Photo Cache,

Now you piqued my interest on that new CD. I'll check it out! :)

Panaderos said...

Nyl,

That's true. I related to this song's words when I felt quite down. That was also when I realized its beauty. This was truly an inspired piece of work.

Panaderos said...

Keith,

One really feels the pain while listening to the song.

As for Palin, she did a pretty good job in the debates. However, I don't think it helped sway a lot of voters to switch sides.

Panaderos said...

Ysrael,

Hahaha Oo nga. It's hard for younger people to imagine now that James Taylor used to sport long hair. Parang si Michael Jackson. A lot of kids these days probably don't know that he used to be black. :D

Panaderos said...

Rudy,

I remember enjoying listening to a cousin and some friends play their guitars during such sessions. Aside from JT, America was another favorite. :)

Panaderos said...

R-Yo,

The song appeals to those of us who have had our share of ups and downs in our lives. Through beautifully simple words and beautiful music, James Taylor was able to capture the pain we all sometimes go through.

Panaderos said...

Neuroticsister,

Thank you very much for the kind words and thoughts. I'm fine naman but I appreciate the support. :)

Panaderos said...

Rolly,

Thanks. I like this version because the live performance done in a quiet setting was so appropriate for the song.

lovely lyrics. kinda sad though. james taylor's voice is melancholic.
perfect when I'm on a pensive mode.

It was Dan Fogelberg who died last year, thought it was JT. Jim Furyk, a PGA player does look like JT. Cheers!

Mr. Baker, I believe his new cd is called COVERS.

Panaderos said...

Mari,

I agree. I play it when I'm likewise in the same mood.

Panaderos said...

Princess_Dyanie,

On behalf of James Taylor, thank you very much for the complement. Naks! :D

Panaderos said...

Trublue,

"Longer Than" by Dan Fogelberg is one of my faves too. I think the song came out in the late 1970s. I was surprised by his death. May he rest in peace.

Panaderos said...

Photo Cache,

Thank you very much for the info! Have a great weekend, my friend. I'll stop Borders this weekend to get one. Thanks again. :)

It's kinda hard to think that James Taylor's folk music stood out of the 70's hippie rock sound ! Perhaps the world needed someone to make songs that speak of friendship and healing of the heart :)

Panaderos said...

Dong,

I love Simon and Garfunkel's songs too and I probably have the same greatest hits CD that you have. :)

Panaderos said...

Witsandnuts,

Thanks. I'll check your playlist out. :)

Panaderos said...

BW,

That's so true. The late 60s were marked by the dominance of psychedelic rock music with the likes of Hendrix, The Who, Eric Clapton, and Jefferson Airplane. The music of musicians like James Taylor and Simon & Garfunkel were like a breath of fresh air.

BlogusVox said...

JT is an all-time favorite of mine. When she was just a baby, I used to rock my daughter to sleep singing Sweet Baby James.

And yes, along with S&G, Carol King and Don Mclean. They are a breather from the metalic sounds of the 60's and 70's.

Panaderos said...

Blogusvox,

True. There were other folk artists that came out too during that time such as Harry Chapin and Gordon Lightfoot but they did not end up as big as the ones you mentioned.

mitsuru said...

JT's songs were the staple in folk houses that i frequent back in the day. of course, kasama na sina John Denver, Jim Croce, CSNY, Seals & Crofts, England Dan & John Ford Coley, just to name a few.

also, i played them a lot in my old lumanog guitar during my heyday as a "folk singer" he-he

GODDESS said...

i'm not politically inclined so i didn't comment on your most recent entry for fear of coming across as an idiot (LOL)!

kaya dito na lang, kasi i love james taylor! =) fave ko yung 'Don't let me be lonely tonight' and 'Don't be sad when your Sun is Down'.

been a while, eh??

Panaderos said...

Mitsuru,

Pards, is Lumanog still around? I remember that they used to have a music store in Sta. Mesa. I remember seeing several lines of guitars on their display window whenever the jeepney I was on would stop in front of their store.

Panaderos said...

Goddess,

JT's folk songs, though mellow, are never mushy. That's what I like about them.

True. It's certainly been a while. :)

Goddess,

My apologies but my bloghopping has been impacted by the volume of work. Plus a prolonged case of writer's block is upon me right now. But I'll try to visit more often. Thanks. :)

Panaderos said...

Tinay,

Hello! Kumusta na? Great to see you again. I'm fine naman, thanks. Quite busy with office work and thus I haven't been able to do a decent amount of bloghopping.

I hope things have been well with you. Ingat. :)

Panaderos said...

Lazarus,

Fire and Rain was JT's first hit from 1970. It was a song that came to him after hearing of his fiancee's death. This song was also his attempt to express his depression and sadness over the other sad events in his life such as his heroin addiction and previous professional failures. Beautiful music with poignant lyrics.
