As a music lover, I've always been a sucker for songs with music that bring an original, new sound to the public's ears. But I also go for the entire package. It's a big bonus for me if a song with beautiful and original music is also endowed with a great set of lyrics. It's poetry set to music.
The following song is one of those. I've loved this song from the very moment I first heard it when it came out in late 1988.
The song's called "Fast Car", written and performed by Tracy Chapman, a great American folk singer. The acoustic guitar introduction and sound was, for me, one of the most original I've ever heard then and since. In terms of originality, I would rank it up there with the guitar and sitar combination that served as intro on the Beatles' song "Norwegian Wood".
I loved the lyrics too. They spoke of sadness, heartbreak and disappointment. In her desire to leave a life of despair and hardship behind, a girl fell for the charms of one who seemingly offered her a way out poverty, one who could help her fulfill her lifelong dreams. But as they lived a life together, she finally realized that all the hopes she had in him were misplaced.
Ms. Chapman eventually won a Grammy ("Best Female Pop Vocal Performance") for this song. Let me then share with you the words that went with the music.
You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school that's what I did
You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way
So remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs
So remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

Yeah, she's was great. I often compared her to Janis Ian from way back who, like her, often wrote songs that touch on the pains of love... and some other issues, hehe. :-D
She's a poet, not a singer. A female version of Bob Dylan if you may. Sadly she no longer records her songs.
Good song. Tracy Chapman is a good singer evidenced by her impressive record sales. I like her song " Give Me One Reason" a lot :)
you bought a prepaid wifi card???
Love this song!
good one!
I love this song. such a big hit!
This is a great song...her sound was unique when this song first came out. Also love her "Give Me One Reason".
I love Tracy Chapman! I especially love her song Baby Can I Hold You... err... memories, you know. heh... :)
that song speaks so eloquently of intense hopelessness. there was a time that song spoke of things i was so afraid of.
things are better now. i'm glad i didn't fall for the guy with the fast car and worked hard for whatever i have now.
mr. baker,
i didn't know who tracy chapman was until i was in college. during my initiation in a college org, they decided i be their live jukebox. someone said i should sing fast car and i didn't really know what that song was. and so after that i made it my business to listen to tracy chapman. you're right, it is one heck of an original song. a true classic.
Rudy,
I read a New York Times piece on Janis Ian a few years ago. At the time, she was still performing in bars. I haven't heard anything new since.
Blogusvox,
Yeah, I wonder what brought about her decision to cease recording. Not good for us music fans. :(
BW,
"Give Me One Reason" was a great song too. I liked its lyrics too.
Mari,
No, I didn't get a prepaid wifi card. The hotel I stayed in charged way too much money for it.
Rolly, RDL, The Dong,
Thanks guys! :)
Luna Miranda,
I loved the guitar riff on this song. I felt it was so original and in a big way it helped turn me on to the song.
Jet,
Hahaha A lot of the songs I love also hold dear memories for me. :D Hindi ka nag-iisa! :)
Atticus,
I loved the song's message about the trap some people sometimes fall for in their desperation to escape their life's woes.
I'm very happy that things turned out very well for you. Take care always.
Hi Jane!
Kumusta ka na? Did you get to sing the song for your college org? :D
It truly is a beautiful song. I just hope that she'd reconsider her decision to stop recording.
do you know joan armatrading? she's another great singer/songwriter with a unique voice, kakatindig balahibo.
Jane,
Yes, I do remember Joan Armatrading. I think it was back in my college years (baka 1985) when she became popular. I'm trying to recall the title of her hit song though. Having a senior moment here. Hehe :D Shge did have an awesome and powerful voice.
For about 4 years i though She was a He.
Duke,
Hahaha When I first heard the voice, I also thought for a moment that she was a he. I quickly found out otherwise. :)
