News came out today that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's (GMA) sons are now seeking the ouster of Speaker Jose De Venecia from the House leadership. According to the article, the move was in response to the attacks the Speaker's son, Jose "Joey" De Venecia III, had previously levelled against the President's husband. Joey De Venecia had accused First Gentleman Mike Arroyo of involvement in kickbacks that surrounded the controversial ZTE deal.
The attacks have become more personal lately when the President's children brought up Joey de Venecia's past drug use, basically insinuating that the Speaker's son is mentally impaired or imbalanced.
All this back and forth between the two politically powerful families reminds us of how power can truly corrupt not just one person but also his/her entire family. Gone are the days when a President's family was content to remain in the background, shying away from the political limelight. Instead of getting involved in politics, family members used to involve themselves in charitable work and special, non-political projects.
However, those days seem to be over now. These days, it has become common for members of a President's family to throw their hat in the political ring and capitalize on the fame of their family name. Never mind if they're not really qualified and skilled enough to do the job. To convince themselves that they're up to the job of Senator, Congressman, Governor, or Mayor, all they need to do is listen to the seemingly endless praises heaped on them by the lapdogs they often surround themselves with.
And now it seems to me that based on these two news articles, the Arroyo children seem to be on their way to setting a new low in terms of public behavior. To supposedly defend their family honor, the sons have used their positions in Congress to openly attack a sitting Speaker and blatantly engage in political maneuverings to unseat the latter.
They have so far employed no subtlety and have shown no political savviness or sophistication in the manner by which they are attempting to unseat the Speaker. Instead of being savvy enough to let their political aides or Congressional allies do the dirty work for them, these guys have decided to do the dirty work themselves. The Filipino word "garapal" best describes the approach they are employing.
The sons' actions are disappointing and regrettable. Their conduct unbecoming of a Congressman, let alone a sitting President's child. The next Presidential elections aren't scheduled until May 2010. It's very unfortunate for what it simply means is that we still have two years to go before we see an end to this shameful and disgraceful public spectacle.

Thank you for your well wish while I was out.
Thank you.
Oh, and you know me........I just had to award you again!
Hay nako, nothing has changed since our independence 60 years ago, really. This country is still ruled by the political elites and their families who act like royalties, with positions being handed down to sons and daughters. You'd be blind not to notice this, but then again, most of our kababayans are. And that's why we're forever being screwed by these shysters...
Hi Suzanne,
Thank you very much again for the award. You didn't have to really. But it's very much appreciated. :) Take care always.
Rudy,
So true. I'm no Marcos loyalist but I don't recall the Marcos kids resorting to the activities that GMA's sons are doing just to protect their family's interests.
We're not really a genuine democracy because the same political families and their associates take turns in ruling the land. Musical chairs lang.
Well, it seem Imee Marcos was not really an angel.
As of the Estrada kids (from different women) they also supported their father as much as they could.
Politics are not for the faint at heart...
Actually, the only reason why we never saw the Marcos brats resort to the same activity was because no one at the time dared to pick a fight with the former dictator. But if given a chance, I bet they can be as nasty, or even worse.
As for GMA's kids... garapalan na nga.
JDV's son isn't off the hook either, do you actually believe he never used his Dad's position to corner some juicy government contracts?
Hay, pare-pareho lang sila...
Sidney/Rudy,
I fully agree with your statements. The Marcos and Estrada kids are no saints. And I do agree that they could be nastier than GMA's sons and probably are. Plus, in the case of the Marcos kids, they had the entire AFP at their disposal at the time.
As for GMA's sons, I just wished that they had taken a more subtle approach. They could have issued public statements to defend their father's name. The public would have accepted that and would have viewed it as a normal human reaction to a serious accusation.
However, for them to so publicly go after JDV and drive his ouster from the Speakership, it just hurts their family's image more. People already have clear opinions on JDV's character. His image is that of a trapo and given that, his son's actions don't really come as a shock anymore.
But the Arroyos, being the President's family, are being held to a higher standard of public behavior. They should have been more cognizant of that. They could have driven/pushed for a change in the Speakership through the background, that is, let their allies in Congress do the very dirty work for them.
I'm no fan of JDV, but do these guys (GMA's sons) think that they can outwit and outmaneuver a man who is a known political survivor? Could they beat a man who is a master of political patronage? JDV's been House Speaker for more than 10 years. In a raucous multi-party system such as ours, that is quite an achievement.
Do they even think that they will have congressional careers after their mom steps down from the Presidency? They need to think those things through. I'm not saying that JDV is unbeatable but in the absence of a major political scandal that could topple him, it would take a very smart, very popular, master of the Philippine political game, man or woman, to take him down.
Heh, subtlety is never in the Arroyo family's dictionary I guess.
Oo nga eh. I'm even wondering if GMA has the gall to go toe-to-toe with JDV to force him out of the Speakership. The guy is so entrenched in power with so many congressmen loyal to him that she has no choice but to deal with him if she wants to pass any of her proposed laws in Congress.
living in this country, sometimes u laugh at this situations, but deep inside it is really shamful that our politicians act this way
Sakai,
It's really shameful that instead of spending most of their time passing laws or reviewing and updating existing ones, it seems that they would much rather engage in endless political maneuverings and preparing for the next election. Hay naku.
Thank you very much for your visit. :)
you used the right word there, garapal! their (arroyo kids) move was ill-advised and foolish. hindi sila nag-iisip and to think that I thought they were level headed kids!
Mon,
Sobra talaga, Pards. It's also a poor reflection on the Presidential couple's parenting. GMA and the supposed First Gentleman should have reined them in. One kind of wonders who and where are the adults in this situation.
